WTJU Wins Five Awards
By WTJU
WTJU has five winning entries in the 2022 Intercollegiate Broadcasting System Awards:
Best Community Outreach Event. Unsilent Night. Last December, WTJU organized an outdoor, walking, holiday-season soundscape through the streets of Charlottesville, drawing scores of people together for a new sort of holiday tradition.
Best News Feature Story. Black Fiddlers of Monticello. Producer and Digital Audio Coordinator, Mary Garner McGehee, interviewed David McCormick, who leads a downtown Charlottesville walking tour that illuminates the lives of the Scott and Hemings family fiddlers. Learn more about the project here.
Best On-Air Pledge Drive. Rock Marathon: Negi Vibes Only. In April of 2021, Rock DJs Baby Shampoo and Nick M brought tears to our eyes with their sad but rad fundraising playlist for the WTJU Rock Marathon. It even won a silver trophy, which hurts so good.
Best Station Promo. Rock Marathon: Monster Truck Rally. Same 2021 Rock Marathon, different mad geniuses. When writer/rock DJ Don Harrison and tech engineer/producer Lewis Reining combine their talents, WTJU basks in a silver trophy glow Monday, Monday, Monday through Sunday, Sunday, Sunday.
Best Use of Sound Effects. Vacuum with Smart Speaker. Alexa turned the volume up so loud the judges awarded a silver trophy to a station promo produced by Aaryan Balu and Mary Garner McGehee.
