Greg Moody Quartet at Offbeat Roadhouse
By WTJU
Date: 05/30/2025
Time: 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The Greg Moody Quartet will pull into Offbeat Roadhouse Friday night, May 30, for a concert which will also be broadcast on WTJU. Grounded firmly in jazz, the group also explores funk, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms in a jazz context.
This is a free event, open to all. You can also listen to Offbeat Roadhouse on the radio (91.1 FM) or on-line, and even video stream it at WTJU’s Facebook page or YouTube channel. But concerts always sound better with you as part of the studio audience. WTJU is located at 2244 Ivy Rd in Charlottesville, right next door to Vivace. There is plenty of parking, both in our lot as well as the Sentara lot next door.
Offbeat Roadhouse is supported by Plan 9 Music in Charlottesville’s Seminole Square Shopping Center and in Carytown, Richmond, or online at plan9music.com. Plan 9 – supporting the independent music community for over 40 years.
When Staunton saxophonist Greg Moody was asked to present a recital at Mary Baldwin University, where he is the saxophone instructor and band director, he asked some of his favorite musicians in the Shenandoah Valley and Central Virginia to play with him. Afterwards, they decided that this group was too fun for just one performance- the result was the Greg Moody Quartet. The quartet presents jazz standards, original compositions, and new arrangements of familiar popular songs. Grounded firmly in jazz, the group also explores funk, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms in a jazz context.
The quartet includes Bob Russell, formerly the jazz guitar instructor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, who retired to Staunton a few years ago and has since been an active part of the music scene in the Valley and Central Virginia. Rounding out the quartet are two mainstays of the Charlottesville music scene, bassist Bob Bowen and drummer Jim Howe. One constant in the group is true joy in making music together with friends, which we hopes bring a little joy to our listeners, as well.
