WTJU’s Mission
WTJU nurtures community through music, arts, education, and human connection.

WTJU envisions a community:
Founded in 1955 and on-air since 1957, WTJU began as an educational radio station at the University of Virginia. For more than six decades, we have continued to extend UVA’s educational mission and bring people together through music and conversation.
WTJU’s flagship 91.1 FM airs excellent music across genres – from classical to jazz to folk to rock to hip-hop – as well as community stories. Our operations also include WXTJ 100.1 FM (student radio), Virginia Audio Collective (podcasts), CharlottesvilleClassical.org, and a variety of educational programs.
For a more in-depth look into the story of WTJU, check out “The Remarkable History of WTJU,” published by UVA Today in December 2017.
Read more about WTJU’s March 2019 move into our new studio home: “WTJU to Celebrate New Home With a Guinness World Record Attempt,” published by UVA Today.
UVA Today has also written pieces about how WTJU served our community during the pandemic, the station’s summer youth radio camps, our podcast training programs, our longest-serving DJ, the launch of our all student-run sister station WXTJ, and our memorial celebration of the life of WTJU alum David Berman.
WTJU is owned by the Rector and Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia: this group serves as the legal Board of WTJU according to the FCC. You can see a list of current Board members here.
The WTJU Community Advisory Board is an advisory group consisting of University staff, faculty, and students; community members; and WTJU’s General Manager. The CAB advises the General Manager on WTJU’s mission, vision, and operations; engages in strategic planning; and builds and sustains relationships diverse sectors of the University, surrounding communities, and WTJU alumni.
CAB meetings, held approximately quarterly, are open to the public. Meetings are generally held in hybrid format — simultaneously in-person at The Stage at WTJU and virtually via Zoom. Parking is open to the public in WTJU’s parking area at 2244 Ivy Road, though it can be difficult to find a space. Please keep that in consideration if you plan to attend as a guest.
If you have questions about this group contact the WTJU office at 434-924-0885 or wtju@virginia.edu.
