Jon Spear is an award-winning songwriter who has become a fixture of the Charlottesville music scene over the past dozen years, by virtue of the popularity of his eponymous band and his regular solo work at many popular local venues. He has released six CDs of mostly original music including the Blues Blast Magazine nominee for Best Live Album of 2016. His recording projects have charted in the USA, UK, France, Australia and Canada. Over the years, Jon has shared billings with the Isely Brothers, Delbert McClinton, Junior Brown, Debbie Davies, and many more. He was also a semi-finalist (with fellow local artist Dara James) at the 33rd International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN.
Following the breakup of his band a few years ago, Jon has delved deeper into his folk singing roots from the 1960s and concentrated on writing songs in the Americana genre. In the words of long-time music critic Bill Wilson of Reflections in Blue, Jon Spear is “developing into one of the finest storytellers I’ve encountered…straight to the point, these stories are absolutely believable and incredibly powerful.”
In that same vein, Dave BluzNdaBlood Harrison wrote “It’s not easy to write lyrics that are of this quality… These songs take you places. You can relate to them.”
At almost of all his performances, Jon plays a mix of covers and originals. His appearance on Offbeat Roadhouse will be special in that he will only play original songs, ranging from his award-winners to several that are rarely heard, including a satirical look at music streaming royalties and his take on the Fermi Paradox.
