Piano Prodigy Matt Savage on The Jazz Messenger, Nov 11

By Gary Funston

In advance of his solo concert that evening in UVA’s Brooks Hall, which is co-sponsored by WTJU and The Charlottesville Jazz Society, 24 year old jazz

pianist and composer Matt Savage will be in the studio Friday morning November 11th to talk about his music.

Savage is equally adept at both jazz and classical playing. He is also an accomplished composer, having written almost all the songs on his twelve albums as a leader, and he composed the score for the full length documentary film Sound of Redemption: The Frank Morgan Story.  He has toured worldwide at such famous venues as The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Birdland, the Blue Note, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and the Monterey Jazz Festival.

Matt’s newest recording is a solo piano album called Piano Voyages, which features eight original compositions, and several covers. The originals include the Keith Jarrett inspired “Green,” a funk tune titled Southie to Soho, and others. Matt also includes a version of Herbie Hancock’s immortal Maiden Voyage, and Wes Montgomery’s crowd pleaser “Road Song.”

Despite his youth, Matt describes Piano Voyages as a reflection on maturity, as each of the compositions evokes a new chapter of life. A graduate of Manhattan School of Music and Berklee College of Music, Matt balances his professional music career with teaching. While in Charlottesville he will conduct a free clinic for piano students at Charlottesville High School.
