LIVE on Folk & Beyond with Aer Stephen
Thursday July 14, 2011, 6:00 PM
Aer Stephen welcomes the flamenco fusion of Toma Que Toma to Folk & Beyond for their first appearance on the show, and as part of the preview of bands that will be appearing this year at Floyd Fest. Toma Que Toma will be appearing on the patio at Maya on West Main Street in Charlottesville later this evening, and in two weeks at Floyd Fest in southwestern Virginia.
Toma Que Toma, a flamenco fusion ensemble from Charlottesville, Virginia, brings the virtuosic Old-World intensity of Spanish flamenco to modern American ears and eyes. Drawing on the danceable exuberance of the Gipsy Kings and the genre-bending rhythms of Spanish stadium rockers Ojos de Brujo, this group of classically trained and multi-disciplinary musicians and dancers - hailing from the U.S., Brazil, and Venezuela - has layered jazz and blues flavors with ballet and modern dance amid the complex rhythms, mournful melodies and flamboyant costumes of traditional flamenco. In their first appearance at Floyd Fest this year, TQT promises theatrical performances and workshops that build on the playful, intimate sensibility of their long-running Charlottesville "juerga," a Spanish-style flamenco party that brings audiences into the show to clap the “palmas” rhythms , shout “jaleos” and dance along.
