History of Noise
When:
Monday, April 08 11:00PM
Hosted by:
Joy + the Hep Imp
Category:
Rock

This show explores the space where noise and music have intersected throughout the last century, starting at John Cage and continuing with current bands like No Age and Death Grips. Music is, after all, a subset of noise. What constitutes music? Can noise be music? Is sound art not an extreme example of music? What about artists that incorporate elements of noise into their work? If you want music that sounds just like noise, join hosts Joy Merten and Chris McRae as they test the limits of accessibility. They will talk about specific groups of artists who have had a significant impact on the genre, like Japanese noise bands (Merzbow, Les Rallizes Dénudés) and Providence in the late 90s/early 2000s (Lightning Bolt, Black Dice, and related side projects). The show will touch upon everything from harsh noise to noise pop and noise rock, found sound to drone, lo-fi to no wave, and all the genres in between.

When a singer or band records a cover version of a previously recorded song, they reinterpret the original while creating something new. Sometimes the cover version is a deconstruction of the former piece of music, and other times it may parallel the first version, building on it, and creating a fresh and unique experience in music. Rock covers including The Beatles covering The Cookies, Joan Jet covering Tommy James and The Cowboy Junkies, Counting Crows, Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello, The Byrds, Tom Petty and many more obscure and lesser known recordings.

This isn’t your father’s classical crossover, it’s music without boundaries.

Garage punk began with the rawness and spontaneity of 1960s garage bands like The Monks and The Sonics, who had a major influence on punk’s aesthetic a decade later. Join Joy Merten as she makes her way through the R&B, psychedelic, and surf rock sounds of 1960s garage, to the 1980s and 1990s revivals of the genre with bands like The Oblivians and the Mummies, and others who incorporated hardcore and grunge into the sound. There is another revival currently in the works, with new artists like Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, and Jay Reatard. The question remains: how does garage relate to punk in 2013?

Category:
Rock

From Aerosmith to ZZ Top: The Classic Crock Show. OK, so here’s the deal: Every so often, we allow this half-delusional laid-off classic rock DJ named Don Arlo two hours of airtime to  “really rock the place” with playlists filled with the likes of Rush, Blue Oyster Cult, Heart, Steve Miller Band and the Guess Who. Arlo usually brings his former morning show sidekick "Cozy" Powell with him. Why do we do this? Well, Don Arlo’s specialty is playing the “deep cuts” – the stuff you rarely hear on the commercial stations. Maybe that was why he was laid off. And maybe that’s why he’s so perfect for WTJU. So get the Led out and make that call. Support community radio while you still can. There is unrest in the forest, and there is trouble with the trees (FYI: the maples want more sunlight and the oaks ignore their pleas).
