Three classic jazz films
A FREE kick-off event for the 2011 WTJU Jazz marathon
Random Row Books
315 W. Main St., Charlottesville
Sunday, September 25th
7:00-9:00pm
We'll be showing three short films to get everyone in a jazz mood:
The Cradle is Rocking (1962): George "Kid Shiek" Cola and the Olympia Brass Band are featured in this rare film about New Orleans Jazz
Jazz Parades: Feet Don't Fail Me Now (1990): This Alan Lomax film explores the cathartic Sunday jazz parade of social clubs like King Zulu, the Young Olympians and the White Eagles in New Orleans.
International Sweethearts of Rhythm (1986): This toe-tapping music film tells the story of the swinging, multi-racial all-women jazz band of the 1940s. A 16 piece band with a strong brass section, heavy percussion, and a deep rhythmic sense, the Sweethearts featured many of the best female musicians of the day.
