at Fry’s Springs Beach Club
Saturday, November 7, 2009 6pm-Midnight
George Melvin, the beloved Charlottesville jazz, blues, and gospel keyboard player, and a great longtime friend of WTJU, is currently facing some serious medical bills, and needs to begin building a fund that will enable him to receive a kidney transplant. His story is one of late-diagnosed Type II Diabetes that began revealing its damage to his body in 1994. Even though the Melvins had been unable to afford health insurance coverage because of George's pre-existing diabetes, they were able to cover his increasing medical costs for nearly twelve years. In late 2005 he had to go on dialysis because the Diabetes had caused damage to his kidneys. Even though Medicare immediately began 80% coverage of his medical costs because of End Stage Renal Disease, the costs that remain for uninsured individuals are heavy.
To help cover some of these costs, a benefit concert, Jazzin’ For George, will be held Saturday November 7th, from 6pm until midnight, at Fry’s Springs Beach Club on Jefferson Park Avenue in Charlottesville. George will perform with several different groups, including Blue Indigo, The Charlottesville Jazz Giants (with Hod O’Brien, Robert Jospe and Royce Campbell), and Greenwich Swing time. For a complete schedule of performers and more information, please visit www.GeorgeMelvinBenefit.org. WTJU urges you to give back to this great man, who has given so much to our community over the years. If you cannot attend the benefit, please send a check to:
