Wed, Mar 11, 2009: "Portrait of the Artist" [17:06 - 19:00, Karyl Glad]
Wed., Mar. 11, 2009, 5-7 PM, "Portrait of the Artist", Host: Karyl Glad, "The Cello As A Cantor"
My show this evening, "The Cello as a Cantor", was selected because last evening was the end of the Jewish celebration of "Purim" (the Celebration of Queen Esther), but the walled cities (at the time of Joshua-- Shushan and Jerusalem) are celebrating "Shushan Purim" today until sundown; so, I decided to begin with a few short Sephardic songs and then air Ernest Bloch's masterpiece, "Schelomo" (which is King Solomon's name). I will follow with various Jewish religious works that use the cello as a cantor and end with Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's "Cello Sonata No. 2 in D Major, Op. 58". Next week on "Portrait of the Artist", I will begin Handel's Lenten work, "Il Trionfo del Tempo e della verita" ("The Triumph of Time and Truth") and also celebrate soprano Emma Kirby's 60th Birthday (2/26) with an hour of her singing religious works of Mozart, Bach and Handel. My comments on World Vision and the book, "The Hole in Our Gospel" written by Richard Stearns (World Vision President and former Corporate CEO) which was released on 3/10/09, were: "2 Thumbs Up", to borrow a phrase. It is recommended reading for religious and non-religious individuals, particularly in this economy. It can change your life! World Vision is a 501(c)(3) Christian humanitarian organization, dedicated to working with children, families and communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. They have worldwide presence in about 100 countries. I am a Child Ambassador Volunteer for World Vision and hope to sponsor 100 to 200 children worldwide this year. My web page on World Vision's secure web site is: "connect.worldvision.org/person/w4kai_t" or if it is easier, "connect.worldvision.org/person" and then enter my initials as "starts with", enter a "K" (first name), a "G" (last name), and for the State select "VA.", click on "Search" and my name will appear. Click on "view" and you will go to my site (my name is on my site as, "Welcome to Karyl Glad's campaign for children".) You can bookmark my page and return frequently. You can select a child in any country, with any birth date, gender, or any age. The "Learn" bar has great information. Click on "Sponsor" and it will take you to view children and allow you to make a selection. This one on one child sponsorship experience will change your life. The children are wonderful. They write or someone writes their words for them (too young to write). You receive their letter and a translation. You may E-Mail them or send them letters (they receive your letters and a translation). Your sponsorship sends them to school and helps them in everyday life. You receive an annual picture, school report and update on their WV project. (My sponsor children want to be Teachers, Doctors, Mathematicians, they love Science, etc., and are tremendous Artists as well.) They love to know someone cares! You will receive a Welcome Kit from World Vision, a DVD, pictures of your Sponsor Child and information about them. Let's change the world one child at a time! World Vision has top ratings from all Non-profit rating groups. You can also go to "Gift Catalog" after you reach the Child Sponsor page, (top menu bar). This may not be what you expect! It allows you to buy e.g. sheep for a WV family, or contribute to a share of a well, or contribute school supplies, or..., to make the donation, and send a WV Thank You Card to the friend in whose name you donated the money, for a birthday present or other event. Actually, you don't even need an event! You, may purchase, too! Many ways to help can be seen in the on-line catalog and you may also request that "World Vision Gift Catalog" be mailed to you for FREE! ENJOY! and -- Join me next week on "Portrait of the Artist" for my show entitled, "Time Will Tell - Part I" "Shalom!" Karyl K. Glad
