Great Day in CharlottesvilleThe photograph you are viewing was inspired by the famous 1958 photograph by Art Kane for Esquire magazine of 57 jazz musicians that congregated at 126th Street in Harlem to celebrate jazz music history in picture form. The photograph was published in the January 1959 issue of Esquire and was part of the feature article "The Golden Age of Jazz." Our photograph attempts to capture a "Great Day in Charlottesville" and celebrates the vast and wonderful collection of talented jazz and blues musicians that live and perform their music in central Virginia. The photograph was taken September 10, 2000 on the steps of Old Cabell Hall on the grounds of the University of Virginia, as part of WTJU's 2000 Jazz Marathon (10/13 - 10/20). The photographer was Gary Funston.
