Columbia Gems: Columbia Record Company 1955-2005
2005 marks the 50th anniversary of Miles Davis' first release on Columbia Records. While "Columbia Gems" will revisit some of Miles' very best work, he was by no means the only great musician signed with Columbia Records. Other jazz legends such as Billie Holiday, Erroll Garner, Gerry Mulligan, Dave Brubeck, Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Charles Mingus, JJ Johnson, Stan Getz, and Dexter Gordon made recordings that are considered indispensible. Don't miss this thorough survey of mainstream jazz.

Crybabies
Crying: it's the most shameful thing a person can do. Yet we've all done it. Whether it's breaking up, having to put a favorite nephew to sleep, eating too many Sour Patch Kids, or getting punched in the neck that gets your waterworks going, everyone can identify with a song about crying. Brian and Elizabeth bring you just that, with two hours of songs about crying. Or tangentially related to crying. Featuring the likes of Guns-n-Roses, Atsushi, a strictly limited number of whiny bands, and your mom (crying about what a failure you are).

Sunshine Daydream: Dawn of the Dead - From Birth to ?
The Sunshine Daydreamers bring you Dawn of the Dead, two hours of music from the Grateful Dead spanning from 1965 through 1972. The time was the sixties. The place was San Francisco. The fuel was psychedelia and the belief that the world could live as one. The blend of these elements created an electric synergy resulting in music that was so transcendent that it is as important today as it was then. From Garcia's eerie vibrato to Pigpen's infamous raps you will hear tasteful acoustic numbers, ballads of mischief, and the quintessential controlled chaos jams that encapsulate the vibe of the times. Tune in, turn on your lovelight, and drop us some cash to support the station that brings you only the highest quality music. Shall we go, you and I, while we can? through the transitive nightfall of diamonds...

Curious about the latest jazz releases that have arrived at the station? Then join me, Nick Page, along with my guest, Hammond B3 organist George Melvin, for 3 hours of New Month, New Music. Listen Up! Jazz as Social Commentary
Social dynamics have always played in the creative process. Throughout its history, the artisans of jazz have devoted their art to convey messages regarding "signs of the times". From Max Roach to Nnenna Freelon, Miriam Makeba to Branford Marsalis - and quite a few in between - this segment will briefly explore some of these distinctly relevant expressions by musicians of the past and present. You're invited to join host Michael Shelton on a two-hour journey of this often overlooked and downplayed aspect within the field of America's original art form - and to show your support with a pledge! Listen up! It's jazz as social commentary, right here on WTJU-FM.

1964: Watershed Jazz Recordings
The 60's are remembered for the civil rights movement, flower power, the Vietnam War, protests, riots, and some of the best jazz ever recorded. 1964 was an exceptional year that produced many 5-star masterpieces such John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", Eric Dolphy's "Out to Lunch", Wayne Shorter's "Speak No Evil and Juju", Horace Silver's "Song for my Father" and Andrew Hill's "Point of Departure". This show will feature music from the above recordings as well as many other important recordings from 1964 that pushed the boundaries of the art form and shaped modern jazz for the last four decades. Join me, Sean, and my co-host Gordon as we celebrate a very fine year in Jazz.
