10AM-12N German
Music of the 17th Century
Jenny Wyss-Jones
Germany of the 17th century saw a wealth of musical
influences composers like Heinrich Schuetz brought expertise in
Italian composition techniques, with an emphasis on the expression of
the German language; Samuel Scheidt learned from Flemish masters and
created an organ tradition of Germanys own; and Johann Hermann Schein
arranged popular, traditional German dances for printing and
distribution throughout Europe. Emerging from the devastation
of the Thirty Years-War, many German composers turned inward and
created sacred songs and choral works to soothe the soul. You
can hear a sampling of these musical riches on German Music of the
17th Century.

from the chant of a single voice to rousing orchestra and chorus,
from just a few minutes long to others lasting the better part of an

10PM-1AM Aaron Copland: American
Master
Colin Campbell
Aaron Copland's music captured
the spirit of the American west, among other regions he visited over
his lifetime. Although his most well-known works have a distinctive
sound, the virtuosic composer also experimented with jazz in
classical music at a time when audiences had little appreciation for
the fusion which made George Gershwin successful. Tune in as Colin
brings you three hours of his music, from his popular masterpieces
like Appalachian Spring to his many lesser-known gems.
