CWTIII Welcome to the world of 91.1 WTJU: A world ruled by music! A world born in 1957 and a world that will celebrate 50 Years of Broadcasting in June 2007.

Since 1957 the technological changes at WTJU have been significant, but what we provide has been constant: a passionate desire to share a huge diversity of music with you, from the earliest recordings to the latest releases, skirting the mainstream, but across the spectrum.

We've also brought you news and public affairs programs, studio appearances by hundreds of guests, including politicians, musicians, and ordinary people from around the world; plus concerts at UVA and other Charlottesville venues. In addition, with the exception of a small percentage of public programming, everything from 1957 until today has been brought to you courtesy of volunteers: the one constant that gives the station its heart.

Our volunteers come and go... each leaving a special imprint on WTJU often lasting for years. Now, in honor of our upcoming 50th anniversary,we are gathering in the fold, searching high and low for every alumnus we can find, and soliciting memorabilia from all. And they are sending it! Between now and June 2007, visit the archives as we add station history, pictures, audio files of ancient promotional announcements, and the disembodied voices of announcers long since gone.

Many of you may remember some of our past studios. Prior to our current Lambeth Commons location we broadcast from Peabody Hall from 1983-2000, from Humphreys House Dorm between 1963 and 1983, and for those who've listened since the beginning -- the Cabell Hall attic from 1957 to 1963. As we reminisce over the past we are also looking forward to the next 50 years, with the consequent warp and wane of technological changes and musical tastes. We invite you to continue the adventure with us.

Speaking of change, in the next few months we will likely replace the BBC Newshour at 4:00pm weekdays with Democracy Now! (DN!) WTJU was the first in the area to broadcast the BBC Newshour, beginning in 1998. But it is now available elsewhere in the listening area while DN! is not. The BBC has also been more expensive for us to carry than financial support has warranted.

Finally, thanks to all of you, whether you've listened since the beginning or are tuning into us for the first time, for your continued support of our Mission here at 91.1 WTJU-FM: The Sound Choice in Central Virginia.

And now... check out our new schedule to discover many portals to our programming... connect with familiar hosts or shows... or open a door to a world previously unknown and mysterious... and delve in!
