Vulgar Bulgars

The exciting Klezmer Band, The Vulgar Bulgars, joins Aer Stephen on Folk & Beyond, Thursday, February 10, in the 6-7 o'clock hour, for a live, in-studio performance.

The Vulgar Bulgars are a group of young, energetic, hard-playing musicians who share a passion for performing and a love of soulful Klezmer music.

They formed in August of 2003, all experienced musicians, but some of were new to this exciting musical form. Since then, they've immersed themselves in listening to and playing Klezmer music at every opportunity.

They've performed at weddings and parties and served up hot freilachs and sweet horas in venues throughout Virginia and Washington DC. -- as far afield as New York and North Carolina.

Their music is a combination of time-honored klezmer classics and recent compositions; the arrangements range from "make the grandparents happy" traditional to "smoky nightclub" funky, and the audiences always have a blast. Once the Vulgar Bulgars start throwing down that hot Klezmer music, it's impossible to sit still!

The Vulgar Bulgars are:
Ben Grondahl: clarinet
Ezra Freeman: upright bass
Kassia Arabi: violin
Matt Gallup: drums and percussion
