Here
it is folks, the WTJU Rock Marathon 2001, the first rock marathon of
the "New Millennium". Actually, I don't normally subscribe
to those types of distinctions. My new millennium is looking very
much like my old millennium, except maybe for a few changes here and
there (I graduated college, got a haircut, etc.). But I must say
that WTJU has gone through a fair share of changes since the last
marathon to merit this distinction of newness.
The
change that has occurred is with the station itself. WTJU packed up
its "bags" and moved from its longtime hole-in-the-wall at
Peabody Hall to the second floor of Lambeth Commons. The station is
not only new but also improved - we have larger offices, more of
them, and a larger music library. Everyone got their own space this
time, the music directors, the news people, (and the rumored WIRE
folks.) We got new toys to play with. Most importantly, the new
station includes a studio to broadcast live shows. The rock marathon
is including three live shows in its line-up: Ostinato, Engine Down
and the Last Days of May. These three bands are what I hope to be
just the beginning to the regular occurrence of live bands for future
marathons.
What
is not new is the programming that we have lined up for this year's
marathon. We're going to start off strong with Wire and the Clash,
end with an old favorite, Tom Waits, and Professor Bebop's brand of
dance crazes, and have every sort of old and new rock in-between to
keep everyone happy. WTJU still remains dedicated to bringing you,
the listener, the best rock n' roll that is out there. With the
radios being saturated with boy bands, Britney Spears and
look-alikes, and that alterna-rap-metal phenomenon, it's the least
that we can do. We remain true to our music and your support will
insure that we will be around long enough to break-in the new station
and give it that lived-in, homey feel.
So
take off your shoes, put your feet up, and enjoy the eight solid days
of rock n' roll goodness that we have in store for you. Oh, and keep
the phone nearby. We're taking pledges and requests, as usual.
One
last thing, I'd like to thank everyone that has helped me with this
marathon and with the rock department in general. Thanks to Mike
Johnson for providing his design talents to this guide, Michelle
Sasscer and Shelby Cinca for their t-shirt designs, and Ostinato,
Engine Down and Last Days of May for donating their time and talents
to the marathon, as well as the Silent Type, the Others, the Remotes,
Calibos, Canyon, the Comas, and In Return, for giving their time to
our two benefit shows. My infinite gratitude goes out to my
assistant directors, Bridge and Brandy, for keeping me in line. I'd
also like to thank Sarah and Tim for showing up every week. But most
of all, I'd like to thank "Unka Chuck" Taylor for listening
to my gripes and grievances day in and day out.

Walk," or the gravity-defying "Float," the Looky Dooky
men will put a smile on your face and a funky jam in your space.
