Free Funk
Back in the 70's, a few very smart people came up with a great idea: take a funky, can't-sit-still-for-a-second R&B backbeat and glue it to the god-bothering, super-shrieky sound of free jazz. Think Albert Ayler sitting in with the JB's, or Peter Brotzman ripping it up with the Meters, and you just might have it. Tune right in for the real thing with Julius Hemphill, Ornette Coleman's Prime Time, Ken Vandermark, and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Stay for rare cuts from the lesser known, equally inspired practitioners of this rare art form, including Derek Bailey, Catalyst, Luther Thomas's Funky Donkey, and Joe McPhee. Guaranteed to be a free, funky volcano of a good time.
