WTJU - 2003 Folk and Roots Music Marathon

Introduction
Welcome to the 2003 Folk & Roots Music Marathon! Once again our
volunteers and other supporters have come through with an outstanding lineup.
In addition to the diverse and great pre-recorded shows, we will have a total
of 6 live music shows to enhance the marathon. Make sure and tune in to your
favorites, and also pick out some shows from artists or genres that you're not
familiar with since one of our many goals is to educate our already musically
well-heeled listeners.
We've put this marathon together as a celebration to you, our faithful and ever-supportive
listening audience. We count on you to call us, tell us what you like, and make
financial contributions to WTJU to ensure that the unparalleled musical diversity
found on the dial at 91.1 continues.
So sit back, enjoy, and if you can't stay glued to the radio all the time, make
sure it's because you're out enjoying live music at local venues such as The
Prism Coffeehouse, the Charlottesville Downtown Foundation, Acoustic Charlottesville,
Lime Kiln Theatre and Acoustic Muse or at events such as Re-Imagining Ireland.
These non-profit venues as well as the for-profit music venues are much of what
makes this area so special. Just like WTJU, they need your support to keep going.
Special thanks go to Eli Frantzen for the beautiful artwork for this year's
t-shirt, and to Amy Hill for lending her talent in making our poster. In addition,
thanks go to George Dayton, Blue O'Connell and Fred Boyce for their dedication
and help in making this marathon special. Most importantly, thanks go to you,

John Hammond, son of one of America's greatest recorders and producers, fell in love with the blues as a teenager from listening to the recordings of Robert Johnson, often played by his father. His passion has led him to celebrate the power and beauty of the blues from the folk revival of the 60's until the present. A fine a performer as he is a disciple, John Hammond has created a body of work that is compelling and authentic. Join Prof. Bebop as he explores the vast catalogue of Hammond's career.

Park your riding lawnmower in back, and sip along to Johnny Paycheck, Patsy Cline, George Jones, Gary Stewart, Hank Thompson and other denizens of the barstool. This American folk instrument, classified as a fretted zither, came out of the Ozark or Appalachian mountains and was popularized in modern times by folks like Jean Ritchie, Joni Mitchell and Claudia Schimidt. Tune in and learn more about the origin and nature of this American original.

Those Great Guthries

Woody was wonderful. Arlo was also great. And now Sarah Lee represents a new generation of Guthries in American folk music. Rebecca will focus mainly on the works of Woody, with his distinctive voice and amazing way with words. He’s remembered mostly for his social commentary, hard times Dust Bowl Ballads and his famous love song to America, but let’s not forget his wonderful children’s songs, humorous songs and interpretations of folk songs he collected in his travels. Arlo has been a beloved story-teller and singer with a voice and sensibility all his own. And now his daughter Sarah Lee Guthrie is making her voice heard. Let’s find out what she can do.

Jayson Whitehead w/Aer Stephen
Throughout his more than forty-year career, Bob Dylan has delivered some of
the greatest acoustic songs of all time, from "Blowin in the Wind"
and "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" to "Every Grain of
Sand" and "Blind Willie McTell." His greatest album Blood on
the Tracks is completely acoustic. The show will focus on this side of Dylan,
exploring his early days as a folk balladeer as well as material from his official
bootleg series which often features rare acoustic material--"Mama You Been
on My Mind" and "George Jackson." There is also an incredible
live reservoir. His 1966 tour, widely considered to be one of the greatest of
all time, began with forty-five acoustic minutes, and he continues to play early
acoustic gems on even his current tour, songs like "Masters of War,"
"Death of Hattie Carroll," and "Girl From the North Country"
among others.

The Father of Country Music loved jazz, blues, Hawaiian and pop music. In his
short life and few years of recording he mixed up all those enthusiasms with
the down-home music of his Mississippi roots. He came up with songs that have
never been forgotten. “In the Jailhouse Now”, “Waiting For
a Train”, “T for Texas”, “Miss the Mississippi”
and “You” have been performed and recorded over and over again in
the 70 years since his early demise. We’ll play those and some of his
less known but equally delightful songs
