Claudia Quintet

Led by percussionist/composer John Hollenbeck, the impossible-to-classify Claudia Quintet's music has elements of minimalism, chamber music, and ambient music, but is performed by some of modern jazz's finest musicians.

In addition to Hollenbeck, the unusual instrumentation includes Matt Moran on vibes and Ted Reichman on accordion, along with the acclaimed woodwind player Chris Speed, and top-flight bassist Drew Gress. The Philadelphia City Paper says The Claudia Quintet's music "is as carefully crafted as anything from contemporary classical music's minimalist camp, and wouldn't sound out of place played next to postrock acts such as Tortoise or Stereolab." Their latest CD is "Semi-Formal" on Cuneiform Records.

Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for the general public, and are available at the door only. Garrett Hall overlooks the UVA amphitheater. Parking is available in the Cabell Hall lot. Walk up to the front of Cabell, then take the sidewalk to the left toward the amphitheater and look for signs. For more information see or call Gary Funston at (434) 249-6191.
