Charter Initiative

Special WTJU News Program on the Charter Initiative

Tuesday, December 21, 2004

2:00 PM to 2:15 PM

In January, 2004 the administrations at the University of Virginia, the College of William and Mary, and Virginia Tech unveiled a plan to change the relationship between the universities and the state. Since the plan (referred to as the “Charter Initiative”) was unveiled, various briefings and discussions have taken place to explain the Initiative to faculty, staff and students. Some attendees have raised concerns regarding the Charter Initiative and WTJU is pleased to present several voices on the issue.

Interviewees for this special show include the leader of the University of Virginia staff union, Jan Cornell, UVA History professor Jeff Rossman and third-year student Carmen Comsti, who all raised concerns about the Charter Initiative.

There will also be comments from executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the University of Virginia, Leonard Sandridge, who provided an administration viewpoint. And finally, there will be comments from Delegate Mitch Van Yahres and State Senator Creigh Deeds.

This special program is hosted by Alex Ward and the WTJU News Department with additional reporting by Sakeena Siddiqi, Gwen Kirk, and Laurie Duncan and production by John Bninski.
